Friday afternoon/evening:

Car pools will leave from the hotel at 3:00 to head to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and the adjacent NC Museum of History. Both are close to the State Capitol and if we're lucky we may be able to include a tour of the Governor's Mansion. We'll make dinner reservations at a moderately priced downtown restaurant. Those who need to return to the hotel for the board meeting can still plan to take the tour. Others can stay downtown for the "First Friday Artwalk" with several galleries open late.

Sunday afternoon:

Put a cultural cap on the weekend at the 2:00 matinee performance of the Messiah by the renowned Carolina Ballet.

You'll be able to sign up for these when you register.

On your own

If those suggestions don't excite you, or if there are relatives/friends travelling with you who want to explore while you're attending the convention, here are some other suggestions. Contact Rachel Fuller, 919/876-6352, if you need the assistance of someone in Raleigh in making your own arrangements. Check at the registration desk for the names of others who mentioned particular events when they registered. The registration desk will also have maps to help you find all of these.

Where to eat

  • The convention hotel has a restaurant and is across the street from a regional mall with a food court and a range restaurants such as Panera Bread, Kanki's Japanese Steak House and PF Chang's.
  • Steak and Ale, Pizza Hut and Cactus Flower are in the immediate neighborhood of the hotel, and there are many national and local restaurants nearby on Glenwood Avenue, Creedmoor Rd., and Edwards Mill Rd. More info.
  • If you head out to the museums, most have snack bars and the Art Museum has a good, full-service restaurant. You'll find many restaurants at varied prices in downtown Raleigh.

See the Raleigh Convention and Visitor's Bureau, www.raleighcvb.org, for even more information or their list of free things to do in Greater Raleigh.
