Joanne Whitney Hill,
Nominee, AAUW NC President Elect
A Member-at-Large for many years, Joanne became a branch member upon overhearing
Nelda Howell talking about AAUW at a Council for Women meeting.
Joanne said, "I am member of AAUW."
To which Nelda replied, "How come you never come to our meetings?"
"Meetings? Joanne responded
"Yes" Nelda said, "We have a very active branch."
"Branch?"
Case in point about the importance of reaching out to our members at large!
From that moment on, Joanne has been active with the Jacksonville Regional
Branch serving as VP for Membership, Branch President and now serves as Administrative
Assistant for State President Laura Rumbley.
Joanne has served on active duty in the Navy Nurse Corps for the past 30 years
and is "transitioning from active military service" 1 July 2003.
When the committee spoke to her she said, I am honored to be asked to
serve as President-Elect. It is a very exciting time for AAUW and there is much
work to be done. I have a dream that one day there won't be a need for us, when
gender equity, positive societal change and lifelong learning are the way everyone
lives. We sure aren't there yet. No one does this job in a vacuum and I look forward
to the wonderful support from the most incredible group of committed people I
know."
Mildred T. Hoffler-Foushee, (Millie)
Nominee, AAUW NC Treasurer
A retired education consultant, tax advisor, and community activist, Millie
was AAUW Greensboro Branch treasurer for four years. Currently, she serves as
branch co-president and state finance chair; co-chair , Greensboro Human Relations
Commission Committee of 100 Steering Committee, and chair of the Greensboro Annual
Multi-Cultural Festival.
She is a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Greensboro, and
is active on several auxiliaries.
Millie's professional career spans nearly 40 years. It includes employment
with the Girl Scouts of America and public schools of the District of Columbia
and Maryland. She has owned two businesses, a janitorial service and an education
consultant firm. Currently in her "semi-retirement," she is a master
tax advisor for HR Block and an enrolled agent to practice before the Internal
Revenue Service.
Honors and awards include: Employer of the Year, Gaithersburg, MD Chamber of
Commerce, 1985; Business Woman of the Year, National Business League of Montgomery
County, MD, 1985; National Minority Prime Contractor of the Year, U.S. General
Services Administration, 1984; and Essence Woman, Essence Magazine, 1975; Woman
of Achievement, Bethel AME Church, 2002. Last but not least, she is a wife, mother,
and grandmother.
Mary A. Peterson
Nominee, AAUW NC Program Vice-President
Currently AAUW NC Public Policy Chair for Federal Issues and Twin Rivers/New
Bern Branch president, Mary Peterson's experiences include membership in Texas,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and North Carolina. In fact, to be a member
in New Bern, she started a branch, with excellent help from Nelda Howell, who
was AAUW NC membership vice-president in 1997.
Most of you know Mary as a public policy activist. In AAUW MD, she was elected
public policy vice-president (position is by appointment in AAUW NC). During her
term they drafted the first statewide Women's Agenda (15 organizations) and presented
it to the General Assembly. Mary served as AAUW MD state president in 1988-1990.
In 1989, Maryland and northern Virginia were hosts for the Association Convention,
"a learning experience!" says Mary. From 1989-1993, she enjoyed working
as a member of the Association public policy committee.
During the 90's, Mary had two Leader-on-Loan assignments: public policy was
the topic in Ohio and leadership/team players in Pennsylvania. Workshop experience
has included presenting at both state and Association levels. It was her privilege
to work on committees with two Association presidents: Jackie Thorpe and Mary
Purcell.
Reading this biographical sketch, you've noted that while Mary has lots of
AAUW experience, none of it is in program planning. She says, "You've all
heard me say public policy is our program in action. Being an action-oriented
person I believe in new challenges and look forward to working with you. TOGETHER
we can continue to build on the excellent programming we have enjoyed."
