Cover Memo

At the July 19, 2002 AAUW NC board meeting, President Laura Rumbley appointed a task force to explore how the branches and the state board can better communicate and work together. She appointed the following members to this serve on the task force:

Karla Atkinson, Brevard
Doris Bernlohr, Chapel Hill
Lola Jackson, Greensboro
Kathleen Mitchell, Statesville
Nancy Shoemaker, Raleigh/Wake County

President Rumbley was an active participant in the committee meetings. The task force chose "ReConnection Committee" as its name to emphasize its support of strengthening the relationship between the branches and the state board.

The committee did much of their work by e-mail, exchanging documents on

and reviewing previously distributed material on

The group held four conference calls to set the context for the discussions with the branch presidents. Each committee member then spoke to 4-6 branch presidents using the agreed upon script. Then the committee met face-to-face (thanks to hostess Lola Jackson) to agree on the format and content of its report. At that meeting, it drafted the "lessons learned" and the set of "proposed goals" that it would recommend to the AAUW NC board. These "lessons" and "goals" were refined in a final conference call and are attached. The raw data from the interviews was left with President Rumbley.

Note that the "lessons learned" are meant to describe the committee's perceptions of AAUW NC and its members based on the interviews and the documents it reviewed. There is no action required on the "lessons".

The "proposed goals" are ones that the committee suggests for adoption by AAUW NC in order to address the issues uncovered during its work and to improve the capacity of AAUW NC and its branches to advance the AAUW mission. At the October 26 AAUW NC board meeting, the lessons and goals will be presented and the committee will move the adoption of the goals. If the goals are adopted, the committee has additional information it can provide to those responsible for implementing the goals.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Shoemaker, For the Committee
