Overview
The following resolution, introduced by the Brevard branch, will
be presented for a vote by the Convention body at one of the business sessions.
If a specific time for this vote is announced before the Convention agenda is
distributed, it will be noted here.
Text of Resolution
Whereas, To demonstrate overwhelming majority support for a womans
right to choose safe, legal abortion and birth control, the largest pro-choice
majority in history will march on Washington on Sunday April 25, 2004;
Whereas, Reproductive rights are under attack as they haven't been in over
a decade;
Whereas, Choice in the determination of ones reproductive life has long
been part of the AAUW public policy priorities;
Whereas, Being pro-choice means believing that a woman has the right to decide
for herself whether and when to have a child;
Whereas, Being pro-choice means believing that a woman and her family can make
that decision, based on their personal beliefs, health, and life-circumstances,
without government interference; and
Whereas, Being pro-choice means working toward a world where all women's reproductive
options are legal, safe, and accessible;
Resolved, That AAUW North Carolina is a co-sponsor of the April 25,
2004, March for Women's Lives.
Discussion
- The language of the "Whereas" clauses of the Resolution was taken
from the web sites of the March for Women's Lives and the American Association
of University Women. See, in particular,
www.marchforwomen.org
www.marchforwomen.org/about/index.php
www.aauw.org/takeaction/march/getwordout.cfm
www.aauw.org/takeaction/march/index.cfm
www.aauw.org/takeaction/principles_priorities.cfm#principles
- Passing the Resolution does not commit AAUW NC to contribute any money to
the March or to send a delegation. It means only that we will complete and submit
the form at the March web site: www.marchforwomen.org/content/cosponsor.pdf
which says: "We support reproductive rights and will stand with women
and men around the country to support keeping abortion and birth control safe,
legal and accessible."
- Passing the resolution would, however, enable a group of 20 or more members
of AAUW NC who are planning to attend the March to organize themselves as an AAUW
NC delegation.
- Passing the resolution would be a prerequisite for any fundraising for the
March in the name of AAUW NC, but it is appropriate that such fundraising be approved
by a separate action. As an example of such fundraising see the efforts of AAUW
Raleigh/Wake County, www.rtpnet.org/aauw,
which is primarily aimed at non-members.
