Alternate Instructions for the Banner Base

AAUW-NC 75th Anniversary Convention, March 16, 2002

Instead of the coffee can/quickrete/pvc pipe stand, a lighter and more portable stand can be made entirely from PVC components.

The pieces: For the stand you will use one 10' length of 1/2" PVC pipe cut into:
2 - 24" pieces
6 - 11.5" pieces
and (to fit the 1/2" pipe)
4 elbow joints
3 T-joints

If you are using PVC for the pole and rod, you will need another 10' length for them and you will probably want a straight coupler so that you can cut the pole in two pieces so nothing is more than 3' long.

Assembling the pieces of the base:
Fasten two elbow joints to each end of the two 24" pipes.
Fasten two of the 11.5" lengths together with a T-joint and then fasten two T-joints to each end of this piece. Make sure the middle T-joint sticks straight up when this piece lies flat on the floor. (Not shown in diagram)
Glue these pieces.

Assemble the Base:
To assemble the base, connect the T-joints on the end of the middle piece to the Elbow joints on the ends of the sides with the four other 11.5" lengths of pipe.

The pole, then, goes into the free end of the T-joint in the middle - so this piece needs to stick straight up, not lie flat as it may appear in the picture.
