AAUW NC Technology Coordinator Report

Mailing Lists

The aauwnc-list now has a representative from each branch. All but the following AAUW-NC board members are also on the list: Mary Morrow, Allene Poe, Virginia Palmer, Gelene Lineberger. Of course, no attempt has been made to ensure that those subscribed to the list are actually reading the information posted there, and no "phone tree" strategy is in place to reach the four board members without e-mail. If there are volunteers willing to contact those four, please contact me or Mary Jo or Lee Laidlaw.

The policy statements and more information about these mailing lists have been collected iinto a single document: http://www.rtpnet.org/aauw/policy.htm

Web site

The Web site at www.rtpnet.org/aauw continues to be used for AAUW NC business. This account also supports the aauwnc-list noted above. The site costs $50/year and is paid for by Raleigh/Wake County and Chapel Hill. At least two other branches have asked about Web site hosting on this site, and a discussion of long term support for the branches (to increase the number with their calendar and contact information available on the Web) and the other AAUW NC content is probably overdue.

Summary of the first year of this position

There's no published job description for the Technology Coordinator position. I'm tracking down other samples here (the CA Online branch has a Technology VP as an elected position, but they're just getting started so no description exists yet). In practice, I've seen the position as a focal point to help the other board members make good use of technology to complete their jobs. I've tried to help out with the e-mail list (which helps everyone), the board directory (though there are still open questions there), document preparation (such as changes in the policy document), and miscellaneous WWW issues (posting items in PDF, getting meeting announcements online in a timely manner, looking for strategies to serve the branches, helping set up the online survey on attendance at meetings).

I would like to extend the "technology" position to the branch level, but there have been very few volunteers for this across the state. I'm working at the Association level to get more visibility for technology issues, and as those efforts get underway, I hope they will result in toolkits, training information and other benefits to those at the state and branch level.

In the meantime, I would like to encourage all branch leaders, no matter what their background, to consider the technology implications of any projects that they are undertaking. To help with that, I've prepared a list of questions that will help start discussion on these issues between a person who understands the project and what needs to be accomplished and someone who understands technology and how it can help improve the quality and efficiency of the programmatic efforts. If no one in your branch "circle of friends" is avalable to serve the technology role in this discussion, please contact me and I'd be glad to help. Please let me know if you do use this questionnaire at all -- I'm very interested in whether or not you find it helpful. Find the questionnaire at:

Miscellany

On the way to doing other things, I found that the Association's press contact list hasn't been updated in quite awhile. If you have updates to the list, please forward them directly to the Association or to me.
