AAUW-NC STATE CONVENTION

March 15-17, 2002

PROGRAM EVALUATION

One hundred and forty-three registrations were received. Forty one evaluations were returned. Many attendees were there for only a portion of the weekend. Some attended all or most events. Following is a compilation of all comments received in response to the questions on the evaluation form.

  1. Was the convention program relevant to AAUW’s issues and themes? Why or why not.

16 — Yes

Yes — covered all areas.

Yes. Good coverage.

Very Relevant

Yes and speakers were very good.

It was especially great to have Nancy Rustad and LAF rep. Here.

The theme was good but didn’t follow through. I would like to have heard what some of the other groups are doing in terms of speakers and activities.

Yes, I suppose. I do not know what all of AAUW’s issues and themes are. Perhaps these should be stated if the question is used again. Otherwise this is ambiguous.

I think so – Many of the issues were well addressed by Ronnie and Nancy.

Several people are anxious for us to move forward with other topics of interest! More breakout sessions to view the EF Fellows’ work; if not from National, and AF update sessions.

Working with Public Policy locally prompted me to attend. It was extremely relevant

Yes, because the workshops contained info that was relevant to topics of concern to AAUW

Membership needs more attention but counterpart sessions was at least offered. (Wish I could have attended.)

Yes - it covered many of the issues very well.

Yes. Membership issues came up often. The 21st Century Recognition Program workshop answered many questions and encouraged participation.

Yes – particularly appreciated the International Relations Workshop

I thought the program was very good.

Yes – great to have National and Regional persons.

Yes – we definitely need to keep up with changes to strive and thrive in the future.

Title was excellent and most relevant to AAUW issues. We need to learn how to conduct our business meetings in a more efficient manner – I’ve observed this need for 5 years.

LAF was interesting and relevant. Public Policy workshop was interesting but not feasible with limited branch participation.

Yes – especially appreciated Nancy Rustad and Patty McCabe’s visits and participation.

Absolutely! Because it dealt with our most pressing issues – membership decline, Legal Advocacy.

Definitely – we need to celebrate the past but we must build if we are going into the future. Programs must be relevant to attract members. We must think outside the box on ways to get younger members.

2. Did the convention program provide useful and applicable information for local branches to utilize?

17 — Yes

Very much so

Some

Could have been more about EF.

Yes — especially "membership" and "recognition" info.

Yes, the 21st Century Recognition Program was excellent. Everyone who attended felt Laura did a wonderful job in explaining how this program should be applied for.

As a new member and 1st timer, I gained much insight into AAUW’s focus, policies and programs.

LAF speakers were motivating

4 – Evening program was too long

The evening program was very good.

Yes. Particularly the Public Policy workshop. I did not have an opportunity to hear others.

Yes – the Banners were a super idea that many branches spent a great deal of time preparing for and it was beautifully presented

Hear many great ideas – hope our board will work to utilize some.

Yes indeed. If only all branch presidents would attend!

.Definitely – I got a lot of information that will be relevant to my branch, especially aging issues and branch recognition info.

I missed the sessions on local application – I was decorating tables for the dinner!

Yes – would have liked more ideas on how we can implement things, not just how important it is.

Hopefully

Somewhat – it was a little short on practical workshops and a little long on national leader speeches – that information was enlightening but not real practical for local implementation.

Yes – Nancy Rustad’s speech which included the present generation and what past names would mean or not mean to them is vital to know as we approach younger people for membership

Partly. Theme was great but it was more of a celebration than providing lots of practical useful info for branches. Lots of references to info sources on the internet.

Workshops (PP & Recognition Program) were action oriented and received good feed back from attendees.

Sorry – No. I felt there was very little to help our branch with programming or membership recruitment.

21st Century good. LAF info and updates, Streamline Board positions.

Yes – would like useful networking opportunities

  1. Was the program scheduling appropriate? Do you have any suggestions for improvements?
  2. 4 — Yes

    2 - Fine

    OK

Yes, up until the afternoon business session. Scheduling was good and just enough time was given for each activity.

The programs kept running late. Either cut some out or leave more time.

    Not aware of needs

Leave 2 hours mid day for personal time for all members, board too.

Parade of Banners should be later in the morning.

Since some people only come for part of Saturday, have business meeting late morning – after keynote speaker.

Very tight, but it seemed to work.

    Very appropriate — no suggestions.

    Everything was great.

A little more time for necessary bathroom stops — especially since during business meetings you aren’t suppose to leave.

Fair. Needed more time for networking.

Re: Dinner Theater: 1) Dinner and ‘Always Patsy Cline’ was wonderful. 2) Too expensive and everyone has exhausted their energy from driving. (editor’s note: this individual did not attend the dinner theater outing.)

The addition of the Town Hall Meeting was an excellent idea.

Yes. Try a working breakfast. If folks got to a breakfast meeting they would be there for the rest of the day!

    Larger rooms for workshops.(Public Policy).

Would be nice to mention in Tar Heel "Dressy Attire" for the evening banquet, so newcomers know most folks change clothes!! One person did not come – did not feel dressed appropriately. Enjoyed the singing and music. Encourage a choral selection each year.

No suggestions to improve. All seemed to go smoothly.

Yes – longer breaks in between sessions would help though (for some meetings run overtime and there isn’t enough time to get things done (a.k.a., bathroom)

We could use more time between end of PM schedule and banquet.

As usual, there is too much for the time available and it is difficult for many members to get around between sessions

    Seemed O.K.

Very good. Slightly small breaks – need a little more stretch time.

For delegates the program in the PM was too long.

Yes generally – the banquet on Sat. PM went too long but I suspect the past presidents did not follow instructions to limit their comments.

More time needed for separate groups for brainstorming, etc.

Make sure that breaks stay in the schedule and don’t get shortened when/if programs run over.

Program was appropriate. Could we have more substantive program speakers? Nancy was good, but another person to give good program ideas would be excellent.

Yes – the schedule was easy to follow, break times appropriate.

Yes. Offer more for members that aren’t on the board.

The lack of clarity in some cases about issues decussed at the Board Meeting and carrying through at the General Meeting.

Need network opportunities – 45 minute breaks between sessions and don’t run over and eat up the breaks.

Please make banquet shorter! We need to arrive earlier for the board meetings on Friday so we don’t go until 10:00 PM The first business meeting is too long after driving as far as we do to get to the hotel.

  3. Please comment on the convenience and ambience of the facilities and the overall climate of the convention.

1 — Fine!

3 — Very good

Very good. No trouble with microphones only their users.

Great

Very nice.

Excellent

Great place to have a convention!

Luncheon was a big disappointment!!

Very attractive and convenient

Good location and driving instructions. Hotel facilities fine. "Continental" breakfast arrangement not clear what you could eat and often charged when it was not expected.

Well done!

Excellent meeting place

Excellent facility — very comfortable.

Excellent — women are supportive and friendly. I really appreciated all that the Greensboro hospitality Committee did in providing food and creating a positive culture in the hospitality room.

The hotel was wonderful — rooms, beds, service, etc.

I liked it

There was a smoking area near the Summit Room. Enough smoke came into this room to trigger my allergy. Lunch was rather high in fat.

The hotel dining room was inadequately staffed for those of us desiring dinner Friday night. We waited 50 minutes for a sandwich. Lunch and dinner on Sat. were O.K. Having a private room available at same rate as dbl. was helpful. Rates overall were high. Smoking allowed in the lobby and the bar area was a dirty nuisance.

The facilities, meals, staff, break-out session rooms were all excellent — top notch.

Everybody is helpful and friendly.

I enjoyed the hotel.

The microphone system was excellent, a welcome change from past systems. I’ve written to the hotel management to express my personal thanks for the staff’s accommodating me in such a friendly competent manner. The piano, chairs, table arrangement including service to give singers breathing room between bites and songs – all appreciated.

(Luncheon) food not great.

The (lunch) food was cold.

(Dinner) The meal was not good at all.

Too much time wasted during business meetings. Why does every member think she can speak out without recognition by the President? Some past presidents are the worst offenders. Some tried to take over from Mary Jo (Pribble). These cause young women to run away.

Parking is the only problem in downtown areas. Its usually easier in outlying areas. The Marriot is a terrific motel/hotel.

Hospitality Room great! Great camaraderie! Room too small for Public Policy workshop

Finding the hotel was only delay. Facilities were great.

The environment was good, suitable for such an occasion.

Hotel management friendly, accommodating. Restaurants should open earlier at night. Not enough time before Board. Hospitality room excellent. Overall, high rating.

Logistics were fine, facilities were good, food was mediocre. Would have liked to be able to get to more than one workshop but realize time was tight..

The Marriott was an excellent location. Comfortable ample space for our purposes. Overall climate? Upbeat and positive.

Since I’m from Greensboro, we should hear from others. However, the hotel staff was great – very cooperative.

The atmosphere and food and facilities were great.

Friday dinner at Bistro 40 at hotel (on your own) was understaffed and very slow service. Breakfast options in Bistro were confusing and you were charged for a "hearty" breakfast.

Overall facilities, etc. were easy to reach after you found them. Perhaps announcements need to be clearly made as to where facilities are located.

Facilities were excellent. Convention planners met their goals – convention was a success!

The hotel was a perfect spot; the staff was most helpful and attentive.

The pasta for lunch was hardly warm, and not at all hot. Otherwise, it was excellent.

Stellar! Appreciated a vegetarian lunch and my vegetarian dinner was the envy of my dining companions. Carolyn, you did great!

The quality of the continental breakfast was poor (stale muffins, no microwave, etc.).

5. Did you enjoy your time at the convention? Were you able to take the opportunity to meet people from other branches and exchange ideas?

14 — Yes

Yes, very much.

Yes. Able to meet other branch members.

Yes, not enough time — I was busy selling.

Good convention.

Glad I came.

Wonderful experience

Hospitality suite was excellent.

Yes — the wonderful hospitality room encouraged and facilitated visiting and networking.

Yes, I enjoyed meeting other people and getting new ideas.

I met some people, but they directed the conversation to people and topics they already knew.

Yes – but would have liked some other way to get to meet people. (Get to know you activity.)

Yes, I enjoyed the convention. No, there was no time to meet with people and exchange ideas

I would have enjoyed more had I not had a head cold. (I felt terrible physically.)

Yes. The Friday night entertainment(Patsy Cline) and dinner out(White Oak) was outstanding.

Did enjoy time there – Meeting old friends and new was great.

This has been the most useful convention for me both in learning and in meeting others. Having Nancy and Ronnie and Pat here was especially helpful.

Didn’t meet as many as I would like because of some local responsibilities. Did enjoy meeting people during mealtime.

Yes – would have liked some non-structured time to visit and share ideas with other branches. Brainstorming, etc.

I enjoyed listening and meeting other people.

Yes I enjoyed myself and did meet other branch members.

Had a great time. Met others from other branches. Did not always have time for idea exchange.

Fun to "meet and greet" and exchange ideas.

Yes – that was the most important part of the convention.

2 - Yes, very much. Some interchange but not enough.

Wonderful opportunity to visit with other branches.

Absolutely!(enjoyed time at convention) Not as much time as I’d hoped for (to meet other people). The Hospitality Room was great!

6. Please make any comments relative to future improvements or programming or any other aspect of the convention.

Board should instruct new members as to their duties and procedure of Roberts Rules of Order! Forgetting to bring certificates inexcusable! There should be a listing of the present board members (name and office). Could be listed on back of "Change, Survive, and Thrive" below "Membership" or somewhere! Very poorly conducted business meeting. Luncheon entrée was terrible! (good salad, bread and dessert)

Too bad the Business Session was so confused and disorganized — we can and should do better!

For $17 we should have had a much better luncheon.

Registration by computer was convenient. But the "Pay Pal" (or whatever the service was for credit card pay) was a bit strange as I didn’t want to "join" this service. I backed out of it and sent a check instead.

This year’s attention to the hospitality room resulted in a recognition of its importance. The whole convention was exceptional — location perfect.

Please list somewhere in our program all state officers.

Contradictory instructions were given about use of microphones.

The breakfast ticket should have made it clear that only certain parts of the buffet were included on the breakfast ticket.

It is always good to meet and talk to Division Officers and gain from their experiences. I also enjoyed learning from Branch Members across the state. As a retiree, I missed participating in the Business Sessions.

It was hard to choose between workshops. If attendance warrants, maybe they could be repeated to allow people to attend more than one.

Retain town meeting — a good airing of opinions and questions.

30 minute breaks in between sessions and meeting would help.

Too long. Can cut down the program shorter or invite great speaker for the conf.

Provide a session for presidents to share what they are doing. Shorten the business meeting on Friday night. Organize morning walking groups — Nancy S. Have a section in special projects where members could talk about what they are doing, especially what branches feel are unique. Have the opportunity for specialized "problem solving" sessions on specific issues:

And have "consultants" available to assist. Perhaps we could do something fun to raise some money for the NC State AAUW or if there is a planned tour before the meeting starts, perhaps we could charge a little more like $10 to help finances or have a special raffle.

Put a timer on speakers.

Appreciate all the work by Greensboro and Triad. Hospitality Room especially well loaded with food, drink and great people.

Leadership summer conference should have a parliamentarian workshop.

We keep mentioning that the world is changing and it is. Young women work out of the home. Their free time is limited. AAUW is not an inexpensive group to join. The benefits are many, and much good is accomplished. I am glad and proud to be a member — but I’m in the senior bracket and have time and energy to participate in our activities. This is a comment, not a complaint. Just an observation.

Re: Registration: Was not told about the packet or the gift bag when I registered.

Disappointed to have the history presentation left off the program since this was a highlight and the mayor shouldn’t have received a copy before Mary Jo.

We did not have an agenda to follow during business meetings!

(Business meetings) Poorly run.

The decorations (for Sat. night) were gorgeous, befitting a 75th celebration.

My only comment is that it was inappropriate to seat the 50 year members in the darkest, furthest corner of the room. They could not see or hear and could not be seen. They deserved better — center front in the light.

What a lovely installation ceremony by Nancy (Rustad). Unusual!

Virginia Palmer told me it was the first convention she could remember that no fellows were on the program. I agree that hearing fellows speak generates enthusiasm for inviting them to give programs. Please add them in the future.

We didn’t have any First Timers, but I imagine the reception for them was well received.

Bring in someone like Marguerite Watson, a 90+ year resident of Carol Woods in Chapel Hill who has made audio tapes "Exercising with Marguerite". She is a fantastic motivator to get folks moving

Perhaps an "old timers" dress and review of some "time periods" with history at that time for next years State Convention. Just a thought!

Need agenda for ALL business meetings!!

Education, Aging – for future

Historian needs counterpart session. I don’t know yet whether I continue but if I do, I’ll welcome chance. If not – someone

Biggest problem is always getting people to meetings on time. Starting and ending on time.

(This relates to Session I) Suggestion – more background in parliamentary procedure, and perhaps more careful planning of presentations during Business meetings. Program at dinner excellent but very long.

I want to hear about projects branches are doing, fellows are accomplishing, and what we are accomplishing as a state – (more than issues and business).

Saturday was a long day (as before mentioned).

Liked the Town Hall format.

This refers to a Breakfast-Invitation only. That was allegedly held Sunday morning. If this was so, perhaps it would have been worthwhile for the LAF Chairpersons to attend to learn the ways and means of fundraising for Big Givers or Donors.

Banquet – 7:00-10:00 is much too long to stay sitting. 2) Time limits for speakers established and enforced.

If people were assigned workshops based on their pre-registration preference – leaders would have (the right) number of hand-outs and it would help to have rooms with adequate space

The banquet program was much too long. The past presidents should have been limited to 2 minutes each. Luncheon – awards should have been given out during dessert.

Use Shaw University Choir for banquet program in Raleigh.

Make clear the definitions of the two breakfast programs, i.e., point out what is included in each. Some folks thought they had to pay extra to get anything warm – such as oatmeal.

May want to look at "Heart Healthy" meals for all conference attendees. Many have concerns with sodium, fat and sugar. Heart Healthy can also be full flavored.

Two day meetings would be great! If we were listening to the AAUW president, we would have fewer people running the organization and spend less time on organization and more time on planning exciting programs
