AAUW NC Receives Association Impact Grant

Mary Peterson
AAUW NC Program Vice-President

Providence, June 23-Marion Stillson, Association public policy chair, announced North Carolina is the recipient of an impact grant.

How the Grant Works

  • Grant should be approached as a whole state project and not just a public policy project to be handled solely by the state public policy chairs.
  • States qualifying for the impact grant this year will automatically be considered for a "Get Out the Vote" grant the following year.

AAUW Criteria
States accepting Impact Grants will be expected to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Build and/or strengthen a deliberate "Get the Facts" distribution system across the state.
  2. Build and/or increase participation in diverse coalitions focused on AAUW's public policy priority issues.
  3. Organize at least two issue forums, with at least one forum focusing on judicial nominations or Title IX; organize several issue-oriented media events.
  4. Plan to get out the women's vote in 2004; involve as many branches, branch members, and MALs as possible.
  5. Increase use of technology in advancing public policy priorities.
  6. Create a plan for increased public policy activism, visibility, membership retention and recruitment, and diversity efforts; and evaluate the project's impact on state priorities.

AAUW NC's Plan

We view our plan as a wonderful opportunity to blend program and public policy issues.

Our application stated we will have two issue forums. One issue forum will be in the Raleigh or Chapel Hill area, with a panel discussing the Federal judicial process. It will address both the role of Federal judges and the Senate Judiciary Committee "Advise and Consent role" in the appointment process.

At our state convention in Charlotte, March 26-28, we will present a model program on Title IX. This program will be something the branches can easily set up in their own community.

Watch for more details as we bring these exciting programs to our members, our coalition friends, and to the community at large.
