Gaston Regional Goes Scouting
Since 1996, the women of the Gaston Regional Branch have worked with the staff
of the Girl Scouts of the Pioneer Council, presenting math and science sessions
at the day camp in Gaston County. Karen Gold, camp director, says, "These
sessions are very popular with the girls." AAUW members have a good time,
too, even when they have to learn the skills they teach.
Gaston Regional adopted this project to encourage girls to have a good time with
science and math activities and to view these subjects as something they might
eventually consider as a career. Campers, ages 6-12, are divided by age into three
45-minute sessions. The counselors who accompany the campers assist as necessary.
It is obvious the counselors enjoy the math and science activities, too.
Two branch member work together to plan activities to fit into the camp's weekly
theme. For example, Wacky Water Week may feature measuring how far a particular
water gun can shoot and exploring how a submarine works. Local papers have publicized
the branch's efforts.
2003 Camp Rotary Day Camp participants are Esther Muench, Claire Riggs, Gail Silkstone,
Beth Douglas, Claudia Rose, Barbara Moore, Judy Burns, Lee Shelton, and B'Ann
Vance. Sandra Champion, a participant since the branch adopted the project, is
conserving her energy this summer, but is expected back in 2004.
Empowerment of Women
Mary Fran Schickedantz
Greensboro Branch will celebrate Women's Equality Day, "Empowerment of Women,"
on Saturday, August 23, with other Women's Groups in Greensboro. This yearly event
is being planned under the umbrella of the Commission on the Status of Women,
with Greensboro Branch being a major player on the steering committee. Workshops
will address Self-Empowerment, Political Empowerment, and Professional Empowerment.
Greensboro Branch traditionally starts out the year with this coalition
activity. A membership table is being planned."
Charlotte Branch Commits to Funding Grant
Evelyn Mercer reports Charlotte branch is committed to funding a Research Grant
through the Educational Foundation, by attempting to raise $35,000.00 within a
15-year period. They have already accumulated almost $10,000, and would appreciate
any amount given by other branches to our account #1429. Donors will still receive
credit from EF. Contact Mary Jo Pribble if information about how the procedure
works.
