President's Message by Laura Rumbley
"Leadership Building Blocks-Communicate, Negotiate, and Motivate"
This was the theme of our own Summer Leadership Conference. Attendees were
treated to an excellent combination of panel discussions, workshops, and group
discussions. Mary Peterson planned an invigorating program staffed by our own
and coalition members. Workshops were tailored to specific branch and state positions,
such as branch presidents, program and membership vice-presidents, secretaries,
treasurers, public policy chairs, EF and LAF chairs, and communications. If someone
from your branch was unable to attend, please talk to Mary about some of the available
resources. Don't miss this opportunity for more effective communication between
your branch officers. Thank you to Jacksonville Regional and to Twin Rivers/New
Bern for an excellent conference and all the hard work.
The National Convention was a great success. North Carolina was well-represented,
as was the SAR delegation. I was very impressed with the way the business meetings
were held and the professionalism that was demonstrated by both our national officers
and chairs and the membership. The 2003-05 Public Policy Program was adopted and
several proposed bylaws were passed. (See Ronnie's article concerning convention.)
Several significant resolutions were adopted, including one concerning "Women
in Decision-Making Positions in World Financial Institutions" and one concerning
the "Statute of Limitations for Gender Discrimination Claims." Please
take advantage of our members who attended convention. They are well-versed on
the issues and workshops that were presented. Consider asking them to be guest
speakers or presenters for your branch programming.
SAR has a new regional director, Ann Scott Terry, from South Carolina. While we
are excited for Ann and wish her the best, we will sorely miss Ronnie Williams
who is stepping down. Ronnie inspired us with her dedication to AAUW and her wit
and grace.
I would direct you to our web site. Work is continuing with the ReConnection committees
and several reports have been posted. Again these are a great resource for programming.
AAUW NC has been awarded a Public Policy Impact Grant. We will be working feverishly
on this and would like to encourage anyone who has an interest in the Public Policy
arena to help us implement this grant. Hopefully it will be a natural lead-in
for our coming election year.
Several positions are available on our state board. These include cluster coordinator,
21st recognition program coordinator, and corresponding secretary/housing. If
you are interested or know of someone who is ready to be active at the state level,
please let me know.
Summer is drawing to an end, school is starting, and the work of the branches
for 2003-2004 is just beginning. The state will be doing a revision of the Strategic
Plan. I would encourage branches as they are planning and implementing programming
to review their own strategic plans, by-laws, and the 2003-04 21st Century Recognition
Program. Wonderful resources are available for programming both within our own
communities, statewide, and nationally. Seven branches were honored with the recognition
program for their efforts on behalf of women and girls this last year. Let's see
that number grow for 2003-04, acknowledging what we already know. Our branches
in North Carolina have excellent and progressive programming for the mission.
