Educational Foundation Reports Contributions, Presents Awards

AAUW NC EF Chair
AAUW NC sent $35,790.87 to the Educational Foundation (EF) for 2002, in addition
to gifts made to named grants. At presstime, contributions to the EF for 2003
total $5,400.83, including $1,350 sent as memorials for Elizabeth Johnson. Let
us work to make our contributions for 2003 exceed the amount sent in 2002.

Due to financial constraints, Research and Project Grants (Community Action and
Career Development Grants) were not funded for 2003-2004. Partial funding will
be restored for 2004-2005. Some funds sent to EF for General Foundation Support
{Designation Code 9110 (undesignated funds)} will be used to support Research
and Projects Grants.
Financial briefings were held during the AAUW Convention at Providence, RI. Jo
Herber, EF finance vice-president, reported the board and EF staff worked
very hard to achieve a balanced budget for 2004-2005. EF staff members agreed
to no increase in salary in order to have a balanced budget.
2003 EF Awards Presented During Convention
Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award
Presented to the National Women's Law Center. Founded in 1972, the year that Title
IX was passed, the National Women's Law Center has protected and advanced the
progress of women and girls in every aspect of their education.
AAUW Recognition Award for Emerging Scholars
Presented to Linda K. Weavers, Ph.D., assistant professor of engi-neering, Ohio
State University. She researches the basic science and applications of sonochemistry
(the study of reactions in or near collapsing bubbles) and advanced oxidation
processes to the puri-fication of drinking water, wastewater, and hazardous wastes.
Her research provides the basis for effective and efficient modeling of complex
environmental processes and water treatment technologies.
AAUW Achievement Award
Presented to Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential writers and activists
of our time, who travels worldwide as a lecturer and feminist organizer and is
a frequent media spokeswoman on equality issues. Biography magazine listed her
as one of the 25 most influential women in America. Inducted into the National
Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY, in 1993, she was a featured speaker
at the 1977 AAUW Convention in Minneapolis.
Research Report Published
The Educational Foundation's most recent research report, Women at Work, released
in June 2003, examines how women are faring in today's economy and what their
prospects are for future job success and security. Action Guide for Women at Work
presents recommendations based on Women at Work research, provides specific and
concrete action strategies and promotes community-led activities/programs for
each recommendation. Both are available from the catalog, ShopAAUW (call 800.225.9998)
or ShopAAUW at www.aauw.org.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowship Applications
The Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships program celebrates and rewards the work
of outstanding women public school teachers by providing support for their professional
development and funding the implementation and dissemination of information
about projects designed to promote gender equity in classrooms and schools. The
program offers applicants a menu of options. Applicants can apply for professional
development support and, if they choose, seek support later to implement a classroom
or school-based gender equity project. Dissemination grants help teachers share
information about the exciting gender equity projects they have developed. Contact
your Board of Education and take copies of the informational flier to the appropriate
staff member for distribution to teachers they believe might be interested. To
