Public Policy |
AAUW NC has a strong history of work in the branches and with coalition partners in Public Policy at the local, state and national levels. Many branches partner with other local organizations to run candidates' forums in local elections. They share their strategies and successes at AAUW NC conventions. For an example, see the information on a Wake County Board of Education Candidates' Forum (Raleigh/Wake County branch) and the Voter Guide for 2002 (Brevard branch). Every two years, AAUW NC participates with the other organizations of NC Women United in to organize assemblies statewide to provide women the opportunity to develop recommendations for changing public policies to better meet the needs of women and to present recommendations to the General Assembly. AAUW NC has spearheaded an effort to ensure that those appointed to state and local boards and commissions represent women equitably. For more information on this project, see the sample project plan presented at the 2001 AAUW NC Convention. At the national level, AAUW NC has been a strong supporter of the AAUW Voter Education campaign. We have received AAUW Voter Education grants to fund distribution of information in key congressional elections. Individual branches (or groups of branches sharing a congressional district) have prepared voter education material such as the "What's at Stake" flyer from 2000.
