AAUW-NC 75th Anniversary Convention, March 16, 2002
Banner: The banner should be 30" wide by 45" long with a 3" rod pocket at the top. Color and design are each branch's choice. The branch name should be part of the design. You may use any fabric you choose. Felt is easiest to work with because it doesn't have to be hemmed and the banner can be put together with glue. You may have a greater selection of colors in other fabrics, but be sure to allow for seam allowances for materials that need to be finished. |

Rod: You will need a 36" rod to put through the rod pocket. You may use a small dowel, an attractive tree branch, a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe or purchase a rod. |
|||
Flag Stand: You may purchase one ($8.99-$12.99* from Michael's Craft Store), borrow one, or make a simple one, using a 3-pound coffee can, a small sack of Quikrete, and a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe. Put your branch name on your flag stand, discreetly in the back, for identification purposes. [If you need instructions for the coffee can/Quickrete/PVC stand, please contact the coordinator.] |
|||
Cord: You will need 1 1/4 yards of a decorative cord (available at drapery or fabric store) to hang the banner from the flag pole. Insert the rod into the rod pocket and tie the cord to the ends of the rod, near the outside edges of the banner, so the highest point of the cord is 2" above the banner. You may want to cut grooves into the rod so the cord won't slip. Let the ends of the cord hand down from the rod and knot the ends. |
Finally: Assemble your banner at home to make certain everything fits together. (Note 1/2" PVC pipe will fit inside 3/4" PVC pipe. One 10' piece of 1/2" PVC pipe is long enough for the flag pole and rod. PVC pipe can be painted brown or a color of your choice if you desire.
Alternate base: If you want to make the banner easier to carry, consider the alternate PVC base instructions.
