Report to the Board from Computer Technology
Coordinator

Mailing Lists.
My article in the Winter 2000 Tar Heel News had background information
on types of mailing lists. One goal for the next few months is to rationalize
the AAUW-NC use of mailing lists. Currently there’s a good representation
of AAUW-NC members on the list aauw-list@rtpnet.org. That list has about
110 subscribers. About half of those are members/alumnae/prospects of Raleigh/Wake
County and another 10 or so are members of Chapel Hill. This means that
some "local" news is mixed with the information that’s targeted, say, to
AAUW-NC board members. There is another list, aauwnc-tech@egroups.com that’s
geared specifically to discussion of technology use in the branches, but
this list has representation from only four branches: Raleigh/Wake County,
Chapel Hill, Twin Rivers/New Bern and Asheville. [See the Fall 2000 THN
for a description of the issues to be discussed there and the Spring 2001
for a reminder on how to subscribe.] So my next steps are:
-
Ensure that we do have a good list of e-mail addresses of those in AAUW-NC
who want to receive information via e-mail. Lists are being distributed
to branch presidents at this meeting.
-
Encourage more branches (or at least clusters) to join the aauwnc-tech
list.
-
Work with webmaster Janet Weber to build more tailored mailing lists (e.g.
AAUW-NC Board, AAUW-NC General) so that the original intent of aauw-list@rtpnet.org
(items of interest to those in the RTP area) can be reinstated.
Other Items
-
At the AAUW Convention in Austin, I’ll be co-chairing a Special Interest
Group Session:
Tech Savvy in the Branches:
ideas and challenges in using technology more effectively for AAUW
Sunday, June 24, noon – 1:30
Wendy Armour Dickinson, AAUW-PA Immediate Past President
Nancy Shoemaker, AAUW-NC Technology Coordinator
-
I put the information
on the AAUW-NC convention on the web site rtpnet.org/aauw and will
be working with the program committee and the board members to make information
from the convention available quickly after the convention.
-
The Raleigh/Wake partnering with Women and Math Mentoring program got AAUW
a mention on local TV.
-
I continue to work to encourage better IT practices at AAUW – e.g. electronic
distribution of membership lists and a PDF
version of the 5-Star form that allows typing the information onto
the form directly from the Acrobat Reader.
